Mr. Hale began his legal career in 1994 at the Office of the Federal Public Defender for the Eastern District of North Carolina. He was the first Research and Writing Specialist hired by that office and was later promoted to Assistant Federal Public Defender. While he served in that prestigious position for over two years, he handled a large volume of both trial level and appellate cases, and successfully defended numerous indigent defendants accused of federal crimes.

To this day, a substantial portion of his practice involves defending individuals facing federal charges. He practices primarily in the Eastern and Middle Districts of North Carolina and also has substantial experience representing individuals in the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 4th Circuit and the United States Supreme Court. He is also experienced at defending clients charged with misdemeanor and felony offenses in North Carolina district and superior courts.

Mr. Hale boasts more than 25 years of experience. He has handled thousands of criminal cases in state and federal courts, including post-conviction death penalty cases, petitions for writs of certiorari before the United States Supreme Court, and over 50 appeals.
